Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal complaints. Chiropractic focuses on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and nervous systems, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractors believe that correcting the cause of the problem provides significant long-term benefits over only treating the symptoms.
Chiropractic is way of living, understanding that true health comes from within and that is the jobs of the nervous system. The nervous system in the body controls and coordinates all other systems such as respiratory, digestive, muscular, immune and so forth. The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, the spinal nerves, and the peripheral nerves. Every movement of your body and the function of every internal organ and tissue within your body are controlled by your brain. Your spinal cord and nerves carry messages from your brain to every cell, organ, tissue, muscle and part in your body, telling them what to do. When communications are distorted or delayed between the brain and any area of the body, subluxation can arise.
Subluxations can be caused by physical stress such as falls, accidents, lifting or injury. But emotional stress and toxins in the body are equally responsible for causing subluxations even when we feel pain free. Stress, lack of sleep and tension, as well as medications, poor diet, and alcohol and drugs all contribute to subluxations in the spine.
The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” or “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement and disrupted the flow of nerve transmission as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a traumatic event, such as an auto accident, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting with poor posture for a long period of time. In both cases, injured tissues go through physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the person. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.
